Old Hammers with good memories of mid 1950's
My first match at Upton Park was a mid-week floodlit match against Briggs Sports FC. Sometime in the mid-1950's

West Ham won by a cricket score. Maybe 13-2 !

Think Harry Hooper played - he left West Ham in 1957 so the game was before then.

In the mid-1950s Briggs Sports were a top amateur club reaching semi-finals of FA Amateur Cup in 1954. I also remember some reference to the fact that they were London Senior Cup holders when this match was played.

I am not sure if this was a friendly or whether it was some cup game. In those days West Ham put teams into the London and Essex Senior Cups

Does anyone recall this match or know where I can get match details?

Some discussion on Monty here, including a small contribution from his grandchild:

Looks like the old boy only died in 2001. Thought he would have been called up long before that!

Read a story about him somewhere sometime back about him having a beer and an oppo fan dropped some peanuts in his glass, he apparently lamped him one with his fake rifle butt

I remember Monty

Khaki battle jacket, long shorts, army boots, bugle, and beret
Physical Exercises on the "running track" before ko

Also would assail you with his bugle along East Ham High St particularly outside the Gaumont and down Wakefield Street on match days

Real character

Except my other granddad played for a different team.

Fuck it, I'm brave enough to confess it was QPR reserves.

Re: Old Hammers with good memories of mid 1950's
My old man'old man played pre-WWI for the youths.

He said he played 13 times at the Boleyn, and once each at White Hart Lane and Highbury.

I'm guessing the youths didn't play regularly at the "grown-up" stadia, so these might have been special fixtures, perhaps special enough to have at least team sheets printed.

Any other sites, apart from the ones given, which might have old youth team sheets?

Long shot, I know

A Brass Band would finish up with Bubbles but the team would come out to a hunting piece of music which name eludes me.

Talking of the singing of Bubbles when was it, that it first became common practice to sing it at the start of the game?

Rather than when the game merited it.

I remember singing the Bells are ringing all the time in the 70's early 80's along with a few more choice songs that wouldn't go down too well nowadays.
